The job was a dream to work on, lots of fun to draw, a creative concept from the clients to start with, and everyone was happy when the job was finished. Yay! First Maya animation

I started studying Maya (3D animation software for those who don't know) last week. I have been working through many tutorial to get a grasp of how things work so I can use it to animate a book trailer for my latest book project (more on that later). Anywho, here is a link to a "Playblast" which is a shaded quick render of the animation I just finished. The first step of many. One of the hiccups, or mistakes is, the rotations of the planets around the Sun have ease as a default, causing the planets to slow down as they finish the animation, I didn't realize that 'til I rendered. (And yes I know there are more moons than I've got in my solar system. Expediency trumps accuracy in this case.) Another thing to know is no matter what I did to the render settings, the file was 100 meg. Giant file I know, sorry bout that. Let me know what you think. Don't be afraid to leave a comment.

I just purchased some video converting, and editing software and wanted to try out the mixing abilities. So I took this old animation and added my bicycle horn honk to it. It was very easy, only took me a few minutes. The software is AVS, it's a very affordable alternative to Adobe products, and it's easy to use.

I really like the way they came out though, I think I'd like to do a bunny story or a series of bunny stories in the future. So they may get used for that. Hello everyone! I've finished up the sequel to The Searcher, and held a successful contest over on FaceBook to title it. Braedie Tobias had the winning entry "The Daydreamer". Special thanks to Braedie, and also to my friend David Walters for all of his help, and of course my wife Angela.

Above is the cover for The Daydreamer. I'll be receiving my copies of the book to send out with my publisher and agent query letters in a couple weeks. Bird Hunt!

Some of you may remember the an online video game I did the graphics for a while back, "Bird Hunt". This was my first really big job using Adobe illustrator exclusively. I've used Illustrator a lot since then, and am much more comfortable with it, and their tools are a lot easier to use now. The game app is available on the Windows Phone 7, so if you've got one, please buy it for a mere $.99 in the market.

Yesterday I was sitting at the back of the church listening to the girls choir and sketching. My buddy Riley came in, and wanted to see what I was working on. So I showed him the drawings I'd done yesterday for the new book project. He asked me about shading, and so I was showing him how to do it. I drew this little guy as an example and he took on a life of his own. Not content to stay on the 2D page, Doodle Man is trying to lift himself off the page. I realized it had been ages since I just drew something for the fun of it, not to meet a deadline. I wasn't really bummed out about it though, because I love what I do, and I am thankful for that every day.

The search continues for a new sketchbook. I've used the Canson sketch journal for almost 10 years, it was perfect, 80 lbs. paper with a slightly creamy tone, which kept the glare down when working out of doors, hard bound for durability and comfort of use (I detest spiral bound). Unfortunately the good folks at Canson decided to stop making them.

I'm currently using a Travelogue made by Hand Book. It's hard bound and durable, and has heavy paper, but it's too small for the work I do, and the paper isn't of the best quality. I'm also trying an oversized Canson spiral bound Mixed Media pad with 90lbs. paper. My idea was to remove the sheets as I finish them, scan them for color work, then pile the pages up and have them bound eventually. We'll see how or if that works.

I took this snapshot of the sunrise this morning. It was a very misty-foggy morning here in Yacolt, which made for some interesting lighting. This is the least foggy of the pictures I took, but I really liked that sunburst. Enjoy, I hope you all have a great day.

I've been meaning to post this all week. I got my copy of "The Little Leaf" on Monday. I can't tell you how great it feels to be published, FINALLY!! I've really been blessed this year, and I'm truly thankful.

The next book (a sequel to The Searcher) is halfway done now, and looks to be my best work yet, if I do say so myself.

A special day for an Author/Illustrator

Today I had the wonderful opportunity to give a couple of presentations at Our Lady of Lourdes here in Vancouver. One hour for the pre-school to third grade, and then another hour for the fourth to eighth grade. I talked about what it's like to be an illustrator, and showed them the children's books I've finished, The Searcher; and The Little Leaf by Jairo Penaranda; and the interactive website I built.

Then we did "How to Draw" to wind things up. It was sort of like career day, before a much larger group. They have a great school there, from what I saw. The faculty were warm and friendly, and the kids were very well behaved. I had a lot of fun, and enjoyed talking with the students. I was amazed at how many very good artists they have there.

A special thank you from me to my friends Kim Wellman who thought the whole thing up and suggested it; to Beth Anderson the librarian at Our Lady of Lourdes for setting everthing up; and to Iris Wellman and my wife Angela for encouraging me to do it.

At the end I walked down to the door, and as they filed out the kids showed me what they had drawn. It was so cool, to see their creativity on the page. I'm very glad I did this. Several kids asked me to autograph their drawings for them, that was kind of nifty. I also signed many copies of The Searcher which the kids had purchased and brought in.

Some were too shy to show me their work, while one girl was so excited she could hardly stand it. She wants to be an illustrator when she grows up, and gave me a drawing of a unicorn, which is now proudly on display in my office.

My sister Karen pointed out the unfortunate logo design on this woman's blouse. The poster was seen in a Burgerville here in town, and was advertising the new pickled pepper cheese burger. I missed it at first, but as Karen points out, the archer is very poorly placed at the beginning of the word Artemis, and to make it worse, the archer looks like the letter F, making the name stitched on her chest look like... Fartemis.

We snickered, laughed, giggled, and then guffawed. ha-ha!

Well, here's some big news for you. The big Flash website I've been working on for over a month now just went live. It's a companion website for my children's book The Searcher. There's still a lot of work to do, like adding a lot more downloads (there is currently only one, a very nifty maze). I'll also have to chase down some errors, and do some more technical stuff, but it's live if you would like to go check it out, click here. Jesus Walks On Water

Here is a little test I did today. I've been learning a lot in my Flash class, and have been itching to work on this project since last year when I did the first sketches. There's a lot to be done to this, including a walk cycle for Jesus, a boat, and the apostles, and a much better/richer painting for the background. This was done for my Flash class. The models were built by my teacher Gus Torres, hence the name Gus-bot. The assignment was to animate the robot leaving the screen, any way you want, just get him off the screen. The Searcher

After a few years of hard work, many, many lessons learned, I am finally self-publishing "The Searcher". I wrote and illustrated this story. It's about a boy who loses his imagination, and spends the day tracking it down. It's an eclectic story, with many bizarre characters. I learned a lot about creating a book. Another post in my Sketches From the Past series. I did all of these sketches while working at HP. We would have down time, and production line meetings, and I drew these sketches while sitting and waiting. The excersise was a favorite of mine at the time, scribble on the page, then find objects in the scribble to turn into characters, or things.

In this sketch I spotted a man in a baseball cap, a witch, a woman in a hat, an elephant, an old car, and a dinosaur.

I look forward to spending the rest of my life with Angela, doing everything I can to make her the happiest woman on Earth. Rachael Loehr

Hello everyone. I've been very busy working on many different projects lately. One of them was the Rachael Loehr Fundraiser at my church. Rachael suffers from heart disease, and we are raising money for her, and her family. There are all kinds of costs involved in getting to Seattle where they'll do the operation, when a donor is found. If you want to hear Rachaels story in her own words, you can find it here. Go about 40 minutes into the video, the interview with Rachael is about 12 minutes long. I warn you though, it's an emotional story. She shared it with us on Sunday. She's a courageous young woman, and her faith is very strong.

One of the events the church is hosting is a pirate night where the kids and adults who act like kids dress up like pirates and watch a movie and eat a spaghetti dinner. It should be a lot of fun. I donated artwork for T-shirts they'll be selling there, I've done a lot of vector art in the last year and so I was able to convert my pencil sketches very quickly. Here is the T-shirt design:

I had a lot of fun working on this project. It's very fulfilling to work on something like this, where your artwork helps people who really need it, and you get to do God's work rather than just work to make a buck. Iris Wellman was basically the art director for this job. It was a delight to work with a client who trusts in my creativity, and can make command decisions. Here is my pencil sketch:

I took the same art and re purposed it again to make posters they could sell at the pirate night along with the T-shirts. I've been working on this style for a few months now, sort of a 2D/3D look. I've got a couple of ideas on how to use it in animation, and also in a book project. Here is the poster artwork:

So that's just one of the many projects I've been so busy with. That's why I haven't been blogging much.

Snow

A little late, but here are the follow up snow pictures. We ended up getting much more snow than these pictures reflect. They were taken on December 21, 2008, at that time we had about 7 inches here at Lucia Falls. We ended up getting about 19 inches total. This was the most snowfall in December ever in our area. It was truly beautiful. It's all melting now, which is okay, because it really does put everything at a stand still, since we so rarely get snow accumulation on the valley floor. Out here where I live we're used to snow, but not this much. Everyone is going back to work now, and things are returning to normal.

These pictures were taken with an Canon Powershot A460 which I borrowed from Angela. My apologies for the size of the animated gif, it's 2 meg. I couldn't make the physical size any smaller, as that would have made it impossible to see what was going on. If people are having issues playing it, I'll seperate the frames into 3 different animated gifs, that should help. Let me know. -- Ryan

Silverlight Animation

This animated gif is created from the vector art I created for Jeff Paries book on Silverlight2. If you recall, I posted my pencil sketch for this back in July. Here it is again below:

I've already been informed that monkeys do indeed have tails, and I have added a tail in the pencil test, but haven't had time to do so in the vector art version. While this animation is not perfect, Jeff tells me it is the first character animation, and walk cycle done in Silverlight, and that he's already had people asking him about it. To which he replies, "Buy my book! It's all in there."

Silverlight 2 Animation (Foundation) Released

Here's some good news: Silverlight 2 Animation (Foundation) has been released! It is now for sale on Amazon.

I created the vector graphics used in the projects inside the book(No, I did not create the cover image). It was a challenging project, as I don't have as much experience with vector graphics, and hadn't worked in Illustrator that much. But it was also a fun project, and I got to create some cool stuff while learning a whole lot.

Silverlight is a very powerful tool, a useful alternative to Flash for creating digital media for the web.

I don't have cover credit, but my name and url are inside, and I'm hoping it will generate some more freelance work. Especially since I've already spent the money from this job!

Wall Street Lemmings

Wall Street Lemmings have been wreaking havoc again. I had this idea a week or two ago, but didn't sketch it out. I have very little spare time anymore, but I made time to draw this one. They've (WSL) ruined the retirement plans of so many people. Personally, I'm never going to retire. I've known that for years. One of the fringe benefits of being an artist is you never make enough money to retire. 8 )

As for me, I'm going to concentrate on storing up treasures in heaven. Try and lighten up folks, it's only money. Enjoy your life.

Pencil Sketch

This is a cathedral window in Paris, France. No, it is not at Notre Dame. It was a smaller cathederal, on a very narrow side street, and I didn't get the name of it. I had been working on it off and on since my trip in 2000. I don't know that it will ever get finished. I will get back to France, I can guarantee that.

A friend of mine (Kathleen Rietz) recently devoted a whole new blog to sketching in her moleskine book. Kate is at least as busy as I am, if not more so. When I learned of her new blog, this lead to blog posting guilt syndrome, a very real and serious affliction. So I decided to share this sketch with you. Enjoy. Have a great day everyone.

New York City Day 3

Today was a very good day. The Yankees won! Yaaaaay!

We also had a very successful morning trip to Riverside Park. Karen wanted to go see one of the locations from a favorite movie of hers, You've Got Mail. Below is a picture of me in the park, they had a baseball diamond there too.

Then we went to midtown for lunch at one of my favorite restaurants in the world, The Blue Smoke:

Game one

As promised here are a couple pictures from the game last night. I yelled my voice out in the first inning, when Jeter broke Lou Gherig's all time hit record of 1269. The crowd gave Jeter a long standing ovation, it was terrific. Giambi hit a solo home run his first time up. Unfortunately, the Yankees lost the game. Still, we had a wonderful night at the grand old stadium.

Sitting in front of us was a family of four, one of the little boys new EVERYTHING about baseball, and was lecturing his little brother about the rules of the game. It was very cute, and they provided many laughs throughout the game.

And finally here is a snap of the 4 train ride home. I'll try to post the qt movie Kari took, it does a better job of showing how packed the train was.

NYC Day 2, surviving Central Park

Here is Karen in Central Park!

Okay so we spent 2 hours this morning after breakfast looking for an Aveda Spa, which, if I'm not mistaken, can be found in each and every major city in the world, including the two cities Karen and I live in. We spent most of this 2 hours walking on Broadway, when we should have been walking on WEST Broadway.

Yes. WEST. BROAD. WAY.

Why they felt the need to name two streets the same, I will never know.

We did however FINALLY get to Aveda Spa, only to find out that it was closed until the afternoon due to training courses.

Right. SO... we Gugenhiemed. 8 )

Then we ate lunch, then we went and stood near the Brooklyn Bridge, but didn't get to go on a cruise to see the waterfalls because... wait for it... waaaaait... the cruise times have been cut in half because of complaints from the neighbors. No kidding. Apparently the hordes of tourists were trampling things(small children, flowers, etc). So, we missed one of the main things we wanted to see.

HOWEVER... tonight we will see history made, when Derek Jeter becomes the all time Yankee hits leader, passing none other than Henry "Lou" Gherig. Pics from the game posted tonight, or tomorrow morning.

NYC

Greetings from the Big Apple. My sister Karen and I are in New York for our last visit to The House That Ruth Built. Tonight we are watching the game in on tv our luxurious hotel room at the Millenium Hilton, right across the street from the World Trade Center. Tomorrow night, and Wednesday night we'll be at the games, cheering on the Yankees.

Mount Saint Helens 2008

Last weekend was the annual climb up Mt. St. Helens for my hiking buddies and I. It's not a technical climb, it's just a long steep hike. The current elevation on the mountain is 8,365 feet. I only made it half way up this year, as I'm still recovering from an injury I sustained last year while training to climb Mt. Adams, which is just to the east of St. Helens. It was a beautiful day for the hike, and I was very happy to be able to hike again, the road to recovery has been a long one, my faith in God and the support of friends and family have gotten me through it.

You can just pick me out amongst the rocks here, Jeff took this one from above as the others continued on to the summit. To my illustration friends: I took my sketch book along and after I hiked back down to my Jeep, I spent the rest of the day working while waiting for the others to come back down. I really did get a lot done that day.

Team Fire Newt

Hi everyone! I've been insanely busy the last few weeks, but in a great way. I've had lots of freelance work, for which I am very grateful. Unfortunately I can't show my work on my blog. I thought I'd share this little side project with you to make up for being absent so long. I scratched it out before work yesterday, and colorized it last night.

Angela and Stan comprise Team Fire Newt, in the Great Chili Cook Off at church this week. I drew up these fire newts for their table placard which each entrant must display so everyone knows who to vote for. Stan is a welder, and Angela is a nurse, hence the costumes for the newts.

Weekend Excursion

My buddy Matt and I went on a long drive up in the woods last weekend. We took the road from Chelatchie Prairie over to the Wind River, going up and over Old Man Pass in the process. It's some of the most beautiful country in the world, in my opinion. Matt is a good guy to have along on such a trip, as he is aces with a camera, and knows every kind of tree there is, and points them out as you go along. He's like a walking talking PBS special.

We saw these twin fawns, and their mother on the way up the pass. They didn't mind us at all, and let us get about 10 feet from them before getting skittish.

We both had a great time, it was a nice escape from our busy lives back home.

Let me say up front, I have nothing against our fine neighbors to the north. I think Canadians are terrific, and have a really nice nation.

This piece is the result of a rather gruesome inside joke. A friend asked me about all the feet washing up on the shore of Vancouver. Appalled, I said I'd never heard anything about it. Turns out the story she had read referred to Vancouver B.C. and the Pacific Ocean, not Vancouver, Washington and the Columbia River, the town where I grew up. So, being the wise acre that I am, I drew this cartoon, and said it was probably a chubby shark, eating everything but the low-fat-content feet of Canadians.

But after going over the books at Uncle Maury's Institutional Grade Tuna, I knew that Maury's fishing fleet had recently expanded into new fishing waters. It was a turf, or surf war. I had a feeling a new gang was in town, and that is why Maury had gotten canned.

One of my many friends at my day job at HP is Randy. Today over lunch Scott and I decided that Randy's night job was that of professional wrestler. His nickname is The Randinator. He has a ferocious demeanor, and his trademark move is "The Tape Gun", where by he wraps his opponents up in the ropes, and then launches them across the ring shouting "AIR MAIL!!!!" Yeah. Sometimes we get carried away at lunchtime.

Tension crackled in the stands
His bat did twitch and with a mighty swing
Lil' Timmy had hit the tar out of that pitch.

The topic today, was "Fierce." I drew this whilst listening to a game yesterday. I was working on it when Jim Thome hit a big two run homer in the 8th to seal the win for the White Sox. Big Jim is a fierce hitter indeed, so I wrote my little verse, and decided to use it for Illustration Friday.

Hi everyone! Today's verb topic is "Learning":

Okay, the kid on the top is coloring, instead of learning. That sketch probably a little autobiographical. Just about every paper I ever turned in had doodles in the margin. Something about that little strip of paper to the left, broken up by the 3 holes, it was a creative wonderland that constantly beckoned to me. I really enjoyed taking notes in class, doodle-doodle... scribble some notes on the lecture... doodle doodle... this probably explains why I had trouble concentrating in meetings as an adult.

This drawing was done whilst I spent some time with my friends' kid. He would suggest subject matter, and I would draw it for him. It went something like this:
"What if... there was a alligator."
"Okay... an alligator."
"Yeah."
* scribble-scribble *
"Yeah. I like that. Giant alligator."
"Okay, let's make him a giant. How bout if he's eating a car?"
"Yeah, I like that. Rar. RAAAAAR!!!"
5 minutes later...
" ...RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!!!!!!"
"Okay, what else?"
"Pummah mounans."
"What?"
"PUM-MAH MOU-NANS." Said with emphasis, to aid my stupidity.
"Huh."
"Purple Mountains." Translation provided by parent. It seems purple mountains majesty was in some song the kiddies were singing in pre-school. Anywho, it went on like that. We drew a screaming family inside the car, but then decided they looked to scared, so we wished them out of the car to Candy Cane Island...

Meet Mr. and Mrs. Worrywart. Frank has heavy bags under his eyes because he gets very little sleep, due to excessive worry. He wears high-water pants in case there is a flood; and he's working on an ulcer. Vera is almost housebound, venturing out only for groceries and the mail. Today we see them cautiously making their way from the bedroom to the kitchen for breakfast. Anything could happen you know, anything at all.

Hey everyone! My verb topic today was "Learning":

These two characters are seperate illustrations, and have nothing to do with each other, aside from sharing the theme. So, she's not floating above his bed in her desk, and he's not reading about her. They just happend to be on the same page in my sketchbook.

I can't believe I only have one more day to go. It's been a quick three weeks, I've been so busy, but I've gotten a TON of good drawings out of it. Thanks again for everyone who commented, and gave suggestions.

My verb topic of the day is "Flying" again. I like this topic.

Thier tongues are sticking out, because in order to fly you HAVE to make propeller sounds. I tip my cap to Kathleen Rietz, I decided to do a father and son after seeing her terrific father and child drawings. For those of you who haven't seen her work, be sure to check Kate out, I really like her work.

Has anyone in the challenge used blurb.com? I need to have a few copies of a children's book printed. I used Lulu.com before, and didn't like the results. Blurb offers hard bound, and a better variety of sizes and formats. Any info you could offer would be appreciated.

With a lot of help from a lot of creative people here is a revised swimming man. I turned up the saturation of the color in the water, and on the man. I added bubbles. I added a rough white border. And I added a tenticle, which I prefer over a shark. Giant tenticled beasts are a lot more fun than sharks I always say. A special thanks to everyone who helped. I'm still not happy with it, I rushed the color work on the tenticle, so it looks sloppy to me, but otherwise I like it.

Also, has anyone in the challenge used a self publishing website called blurb.com? I was thinking of using them to create my next children's book mockkup, and wondered if anyone else had any info to share. I've used Lulu.com, and wasn't happy with the choices they give in regards to size, and binding.

I was away for a few days taking care of some family business, maybe I can post a picture of what I was working on, if I can scare up a digital camera somewhere... anywho... Here are the sketches I did the last few days, not as many as I've previously posted for the challenge, but I've been busy. My topic the last few days was "Singing".

Day 14
This guy is pretty good, I like him. Sorry these are so rough, I haven't had time to really clean them up as much as I'd like.

Day 15
This guy looks more like he's laughing than singing. I was going for singing and dancing here. Maybe if there was some frame of reference, like he was on stage, or holding a microphone. But that expression still looks like laughing to me.

Day 16
These are the roughest of the sketches I'm posting here. Look at their hands... I really need to sit down again and just draw hands for a week straight. They look like they're wearing oven mits. So maybe they're singing about baking cookies. "We're making CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWC-OH-LATE CHIPS! Peanut-BUUUUHTAHR and MAC-AH-ROOOOOONS! You'll eat plate after plate until you go LOONY TUNES!"

Roland had lost track of more than one watermelon seed the night before. Now the question remained... where had the other seed gone!!

The illustration Friday theme this week is SEED. My first idea was to do a seed pod illustration, alla Invasion of the Body Snatchers, something with a husband standing in the shadows with a giant seed pod, while his wife reached over to turn out the bedside lamp. But time was limited, and this idea seemed more creative than an homage to a movie.

So I spent all day working on illustrations, and working on a new character when I realized I'd just drawn him standing there. D'OH! Had I forgotten what I'd labored at all week long? So I immediately sketched out an action pose, and voila!! My entry for today is animated(click on the image above to see the two frame animated gif). *bling*! My illustrated verb of the day is "Fighting". As in, "And everybody was Kung Fu Fight-eeeeeng!"

Well, I didn't have nearly as much time today, so these are rough sketches at best. Three goofy kids dancing at the top, the middle one is doing the Robot, which is a nod to Alicia, and her robots the other day. Unfortunately the robot dance looks a lot like standing still, which is what I was trying to avoid, so I drew cartoony swishy lines in there. Then the three ballet dancing little girls, they kind of got blown out, thanks to my scanner. And the couple, that's what I was picturing when I picked dancing as my next verb to draw. The others just kept cramming themselves in, begging to be drawn first.

Beep-beep! This is a fun exercise!

I would like to go back and refine the poses on some of them, as they look a little klunky to me. But, I think they're a good start. A lot of times I'll burn through a couple pages trying to get a good natural pose.

Here is my entry for the I thought eating was such a good verb I'd use it as a topic one more day. I sketched during two of my breaks at work today. I didn't have time to color them, hopefully I will have time later this week. These sketches are looser than my usual work, but I figured that was okay, given the spirit of the exercise.

And here is the second image, I don't care for the guy eating potato chips. His arms got all freaked out. But I liked the idea, so I posted him too. I'm really enjoying this exercise, and the sense of community I get from everyone involved. I tip my cap to everyone who's been participating.

April 27, 2008 21 Day Creative Exercise Day 1

This is my first entry for a creative exercise I read about over at Alicia Padrón's blog, but it was started by Gina Perry. The premise is it takes twenty one days of doing something each day for at least fifteen minutes, to form a habit. I already sketch every day, but I need more variety in what I draw. I draw tons of characters and for the most part they are just standing there. So... my challenge is to spend at least 15 minutes each morning drawing only verbs. Whatever characters I draw, animals objects or people, they have to be engaged in some sort of activity.

Today's verb was eating. I may use that one again, as I had several ideas. I only managed to get two characters drawn in the fifteen minutes though. I cheated and did the cereal boy in color, taking a lot longer than fifteen minutes, but with those striped pajamas he looked too much like a convict eating cereal, so I just had to.

April 16th, 2008 Bird Hunt -- Silverlight game project

I spent the last couple weeks working on illustations/animations for a video game project with my friend Jeff Paries. The game, entitled "Bird Hunt" is a Nintendo "Duck Hunt" like game. I did all the character and background design work. I did a lot of pencil sketches, then built everything in Adobe Illustrator, and exported the xaml files, which Jeff took and turned into a functioning video game. Pretty fun stuff. It was bad enough that Cindy had been captured and enslaved as the monster's pet. The final indignation was that she'd been renamed Peeves. Monster thought it a hilarious play on words.

This weeks topic was Garden. I had a solid concept right away, but after I did my pencil drawing I decided to do something different. This time I tinted the drawings in Photoshop to give them a brownish sepia toned look. Then I did my usual color painting over the top, but this time I turned the opacity way down so it would be less dominant. Anyway, I hope you like it.

February 25, 2008 My Workspace

I've been tagged by ninaseven to show where I do my creative work. I live in a small one bedroom farm house, and converted the bedroom into my workspace because it had the phone jack, and the best power outlets in the house. I resisted the urge to clean the piles of... creative debris off the desks. One of my desks is an old school desk circa 1960, the other is an old library desk circa 1900. 90% of my illustration work is in pencil, which I then scan on the flatbed you see there, and then colorize in Photoshop. Only one of my snapshots of my office came out, so I included a couple old pix to give you an idea what it's like where I live.

Here is a picture of my house from a couple weeks ago:

Here's a picture from the same day, of Lucia Falls which is about a hundred yards from my house. I walk over to the falls a lot, to sketch and just to relax:
